What Is Safe Kids?

What Do We Do?

Safe Kids Demonstration The SAFE Kids Seminole County Coalition is still in its infancy. After an agreement signed on September 2002 by the Board of County Commissioners, the Coalition began collecting members and partners to help support our goal. In our first year, fiscal year 2002/2003, the Coalition reached over 2,000 children. We are extremely excited about the progress we made in our first year.

During the first year of operation we:

  • Dispensed 230 bike helmets to children in need.
  • Checked over 450 child restraint seats.
  • Distributed over 75 child restraint seats through the Child Seat Educational Program
  • Received over $7,300 in grant funds to purchase new child seats, educational materials and bike helmets.
  • Awarded $52,000 Child Passenger Safety Event Cargo Van.

The SAFE KIDS Seminole County Coalition is continuing to expand our programs to help prevent other childhood injuries. Some of our current projects include:

  • Altamonte Springs Coppers and Choppers Event
  • Bike Helmet Observation Program
  • Furniture Safety / Home Safety Education
  • Bike Helmet Enforcement Grant
  • Child Passenger Road Show – targeting “high-risk” areas in Seminole County.
  • Water Safety – Safe Kids Week, May 2004
